Sword World: Disgaea Edition

Post by Knight »

Let's start out with lore!

First off, there's four "realms". There's Celestia, Earth, Terra, and Netherworld.

Celestia is just Heaven. When a good human dies, he goes there. If he was a worthless one, and is considerably lucky, he may spend his life in Celestia as a prinny. Compared to the Netherworld prinnies, he will only do menial tasks and might fight against invading demons although it's quite rare. Celestia is compromised of angels with a few prinnies here and there, being beings of pure good with wingspans that range from small to extremely large. They are immune to all disease and most poisons. They could even cure a human if they make one drink their blood.

Next up is Earth! You know, Earth. You're there right now. Yes, it's quite literally Earth. If you were good in life, you'll become an Angel in Celestia. Otherwise, you may become a Prinny in Celestia or the Netherworld. However, a number of humans who have died are given the chance to reincarnate in Terra and given the task to slay the Overlord.

Terra, a generic fantasy world. Just use Sword World's default setting. It's got Magitek and a problem with DEMONS (not barbaros!). There's a giant pathway that leads towards the Netherworld. The Goddess-in-Between, the one who gives NEETS a chance to reincarnate in Terra, prophesized that one day an adventurer will slay the cruel Overlord. However, that was said over 100 years ago and she's panicking, choosing any random dude from Earth to give a sword to and send off towards the Overlord. If she's wrong, all the other Gods would make fun of her! Terra constantly sends groups of adventurers and would-be heroes to deal with the demons, in hopes one of them will finally slay the Overlord!

Goddess-in-Between, real name being Aris, is a dark-skinned little girl with white hair and a simple, provocative robe.

The Netherworld, a land inhabited by demons. Demons range from being deceptively cruel beings, inclined on slaughtering every human in their path, to those who focus their wicked evilness on breaking minor laws like littering or jaywalking. The current Overlord is one Laharl, a blue-haired (actually half-demon) kid who forces his ruling on anyone that comes into his realm. Since he is Overlord, that means he's one of the strongest beings within the realm. Etna and Flonne (a fallen angel) are his closest companions. The geography of this land doesn't make sense and the technological advances are random (but that's just like Terra and its magitek). Hel-TV and Netherworld Net are two examples, the former being just TV that showcases a buncha Netherworld channels with the rare Celestia and Terra channels while the other is just an internet with a lot of sites like Twitter, Tumblr, and Youtube.

The Nethernet and HELL-TV sometimes hosts votes, letting demons all across the Netherworld decide on bills being passed. Naturally, these are rarely world shaking as demons don't care about helping one another, but sometimes they include things like "Turn Laharl into a Girl".

Finally, Sword Shards are renamed to Hero Points while Abyss Shards are Demon Points. Get enough Demon Points and you'll start to turn into a demon...!

Creating a character! About the same as doing it in chargen, but you do have the option of being a local or reincarnated. In this realm, reincarnated don't really have a lot of bonuses aside from their own intelligence and a new, but welcomed, body that allows them to immediately be an adventurer. This can be their own body given additional strength or an entirely new one. Furthermore, they have enough knowledge of the local land to function without too many problems. Yet, Isekaiers are a decent population in Terra, so it's not that unlikely for someone to recognize one as such and try to help (or scam) them.

However, there's two things I want to introduce. These will be from an entirely roleplaying perspective, meaning no mechanical bonus unless your DM deems it as such.

There's the BOON, basically what your character has as an advantage over the others. This may be something simple like being quite popular, actually an angel/demon or half-angel/demon, an ancestor of the Old Hero, a once-powerful witch, even an idol... Basically, they should be things that separates you from the NPCs. It doesn't have to be a huge boon, it's simply something that makes you a little bit more special compared to Tim or Bob over there. It could even be as simple as being an apprentice/student to a powerful figure at some point in your life. Or knowing the Overlord thanks to a series of unfortunate events. A boon doesn't have to be necessarily great like how a curse doesn't have to be necessarily bad. A noble might rue their position, hating their wealth as a shortcut to everything imaginable and having to suffer under the stress of being prim and proper 24/7-- you can only be a brat when you're a youngin! Yet, that nobility brings plenty of perks even in the Netherworld.

Possible Boons include:
Being a member of the royal family.
Utilizing a power artifact.
Once being a powerful fighter or wizard, but now you're in your 30's...
Being Half-Angel, giving you more pure blood along with a halo and wings.
Being a normal, spunky hero, inspiring people with your normalcy!
Being a rockin' hero, singing some sick tunes and holding wild concerts.
Flonne once took interest in you, leading you to being within the same room as Laharl at some point.
Being a demon or some other type of race, but masquerading as another.
Being the young servant of a powerful hero or spellcaster.
Being apart of the PRISM RANGERS!
Once having bee nothing more than a NEET, but given a second chance by Aris.
No amount of sexual harassment seems to get you in actual trouble!
Having an imaginary friend that is actually helpful.
Having a body that is many years younger looking than your age lets on.
Being a prinny, but the Netherworld factory ran out of prinny suits to give you, so they just throw on a prinny coat and cap and called it good.
Never truly dying, always something that saves you at the last moment or the enemy just ignores you and then a passing soul decides to nurse you back to health.
The power of FRIENDSHIP invigorates you!
You almost died once, but got a buncha cybernetics connected to you to keep you alive.
A small cult worships you for one reason or another (perhaps because of your heroic spirit or your cute panties).
Despite current appearances, you have a dark past that strikes the fear into weaker foes.
You've been a hero for a few years already, gaining a cult following (of a different kind vs the one above).
Catgirls tend to be crazily attracted to you, always wanting to rub against you and ask for pets or something much, much more. Perhaps to your chargin, perhaps not.
You have multiple doll-like bodies, returning in a different one if ever killed.
Your body & face is quite attractive to everyone, to include demons, animals, and members of other species.
You have quite the stamina ;). Rumors are even spread about it.
You may be dull in personality and/or appearance, but you always seem to quickly make friends or even potential suitors.

Then there's the CURSE, a reason your character isn't exactly the greatest. These curses don't have to be actual curses, like slowly being turned into a demon or having some unknown disease that will kill them and only killing the Overlord can stop it. They can more be unfortunate happenstances, like being popular, but only to +30 year old women (or even older...). Or it could be playing a seemingly straight woman, but only bisexual women/lesbians seem to have any interest in you-- sometimes too much interest. Whatever it turns out to be, remember that this isn't supposed to be a flaw for the sake of having a flaw. It should add some form of uniqueness to your character, a reason to maybe go out and kill the Overlord or an unfortunate side effect they're facing. It's not supposed to be a negative attached to your character for the sake of balancing out your boon. That's far too mechanical thinking! I would also err on the side of caution when making a curse that seems too good. Or, perhaps, combine your boon and curse into one.

Some Curses include:
Always being poor, no matter how much money you make.
People of the same-sex are constantly attracted to you despite your (apparent) interests only in those of the opposite sex! Or even vice versa.
Dying of a strange illness, constantly coughing up blood. It's said only defeating the Overlord will cure you!
Having a cursed artifact, such as a blade that constantly tells you to do bad things like steal from innocents or buy it fat, sugary treats.
Constantly being side-lined by everyone else. Maybe one day you'll be the main character..
Animals/monsters having a very strong attraction to you.
Being forced to consume only a specific type of food, perhaps one you despise.
Coming from an entirely different dimension with a vastly different genre!
Always ending up in particularly lewd situations, such as falling on your face with your panties visible to the rest of the world or finding yourself falling onto half-naked females with your face/hands in the most lecherous of spots on more than one occasion. (In lewder games, you may find yourself constantly mistake for a prostitute and dragged into sex or running into situations where you get raped.)
Your family being turned into demons and only defeating the Overlord will make them revert.
Being constantly thought of as a lolicon!
Being crippled in the past, causing you to limp or complain about reoccurring (phantom) pains. Although you may have a replacement of some kind that just isn't as good as flesh and blood.
Being unable to cry or feeling meaningful sadness no matter how tragic things get.
Being madly in love with being in pain or humiliated, to the point that you may creep others out or it is entirely unbefitting of your situation.
Girls with giant boobs makes you physically weak or ill.
You're not you if you don't have an energy drink or coffee every morning.
Terrible nightmares haunt you dreams...
It has been prophesied that you will actually destroy Terra one day.
You lost your original body, the current one is just one you stole.
You're always getting sexually harassed, but no one seems to take it seriously.
Death and misery surrounds your life. You've happily repressed it or are gloomy, knowing all your friends will die one day.
You're deep in debt! If you don't defeat the Overlord, you'll never pay it off!
A cult or gang is chasing after you!

Your focus should be making a character interesting and fun to roleplay as! It's okay to do something you might not be used to, perhaps a more whacky personality like a masochist noble or what-have-you! Sometimes you may lose a boon or curse throughout play, but that's totally fine. It's just a bit of character development. You may even feel the need to switch your curse/boon for something more fitting after a few sessions. You also shouldn't feel like you can only have one boon or curse. Have as many as you want to build up your character.

Adventurer Outpost E
A few miles north of the "Pathway From Hell", the massive entrance from Terra to the Netherworld, is Adventurer Outpost E. It's a simple, village-like place.

In the middle of the village is the Adventurer's Guild, which functions as a place to acquire quests along with drink, eat, and even sleep! Since it is in the Netherworld, there's a few prinnies that work there. Rumors circulate about the Manager of the Adventurer's Guild, some saying she's a vampire, others dream about her being a sexy succubus, and then some in hushed tones say she's actually a demon! The Manager rarely leaves her room, instead using messengers and proxies for just about everything. No one really knows why except the most trusted people.

The Quest Portal is also right behind the Adventurer's Guild, usually taking you around the area you need to go for your quest. Sometimes it's a little funky. Some adventuring parties have accidentally ended up in the women's section of a hot spring, others in the Overlord's Castle itself! It's usually staffed by the demon Haze, a lazy, good-for-nothing that just ensures the portal stays on.

There's a church for the Goddess-in-Between, where all your resurrecting can be done. The Dead Priest is a calm, understanding man, but the Head Priestess has a raging hatred for all demons and their off-spring. She always devises of some new plan to rid the Netherworld, or just the village, of demons, but it always fails one way or another.

Right next to the Church is the Hospital, where all your healing and resting up can be done. Although some people just want to be patted on the head and taken care of by Nurse Joy.

Off to the left of the Adventurer's Guild is supermarket. It's got everything you need, groceries, electronics, magitek, armor, weapons, and even potions! Right next to it is your local Micky-D's, for all your hamburger needs. To the right of it is "Adventurer's End", a multi-story bar that supposedly has a brothel. The bar wenches are quite friendly there.

Off to the right of the Adventurer's Guild is the Hot Spring. It's separated for male and females, but on Mondays they do Unisex Night. On Fridays, you get "Drink 'til You Drop". Sake is an incredibly low price and whoever is the last remaining in the hot spring earns a prize!

In front of the Adventurer's Guild, on the path to the village, there's the stables. They accept any type of animal. Some non-animals.
NPCs
Manager Mryia
Image
Manager of the Adventurer's Guild, little is actually known about her. She's 35, complete virgin, a Nightmare that has a bit of scarring. With small horns and dark sclera, she believes herself to be hideous to the rest of her world and hides out within her room. A powerful wizard regardless.

Head Priest Artyvon
Image
The boss of the church, who makes the final decision on all matters. He's an elderly man who has naturally seen a lot in his time, but he rarely, if ever, holds ill will towards anyone. Even Demons, in his eyes, can be good.

Priestess Lyrisa
Image
To counteract the good natured priest is one of his subordinates, who is hot-headed and believes all demons and their affiliates should be destroyed in a glorious fire. They're the root of all evils in the world, after all! Yet, her priestly ways means she cannot harm the foul fiends directly, so she's always hatching some scheme to get them kicked out of the city or fall unto embarrassment.

Quest Giver Pegleg
A black Prinny, one frequently called 'Pegleg' because out of all the prinnies he seems to have the most problem walking around on them. He handles all your quests.

Nurse Joy
Image
A bubbly, warms even the toughest hearts type of nurse. Some people even malinger to get a chance to meet the too-cute-for-this-world nurse.

Haze
Image
A half-nekomata demon who claims she is chained to the portal, forced to send adventurers to their destination. Whether or not this is true is debatable as half the time she can be found in the bar or hot springs when not working.
